I received a $500.00 scholarship from my college. Why
isn’t that scholarship in addition to my Jackrabbit Guarantee? Where does the money for my Jackrabbit Guarantee come from? I took a class at USDSU last semester. Why doesn’t that count towards my Jackrabbit Guarantee? How long can I receive the Jackrabbit Guarantee? What is scholarship probation? How do I renew my Jackrabbit Guarantee?
Q: I received a $500.00 scholarship from my college. Why isn’t that scholarship in addition to my Jackrabbit Guarantee?
A: The Jackrabbit Guarantee is a commitment by SDSU to award a minimum of $1,000 in academic scholarship aid per year to eligible students. The scholarship funds may come from a variety of sources – academic departments, colleges, or the university – and are used to meet the university’s $1,000 commitment. For example, a student may receive a $750 Beef Bowl Scholarship (or any other named scholarship). The student would then receive an additional $250 from another source (Yellow & Blue, for example) to meet the total $1,000 Jackrabbit Guarantee commitment.
Q: Where does the money for my Jackrabbit Guarantee come from?
A: Although scholarships are distributed from a variety of sources within the University, all scholarship funds for the Jackrabbit Guarantee are thanks to gifts from private donors to the SDSU Foundation. Scholarship funds for the Jackrabbit Guarantee do not come from the state.
Q: I took a class at USDSU last semester. Why doesn’t that count towards my Jackrabbit Guarantee?
A: The Jackrabbit Guarantee applies only to students attending the SDSU main campus in Brookings. Students taking classes at the USDSU location in Sioux Falls, the center in Rapid City or at any of the other off-campus sites are not eligible for the Jackrabbit Guarantee.
Q: I am planning on doing an internship, and I won’t have enough credits to meet the Jackrabbit Guarantee requirements. What should I do?
A: Students with special circumstances, such as students participating in the National Student Exchange (NSE) program, the Study Abroad program, or who are doing academic internships must notify the University Scholarship Coordinator and obtain approval prior to leaving SDSU in order to remain eligible for the Jackrabbit Guarantee.
Q: What is the difference between the Jackrabbit Guarantee and the South Dakota Opportunities Scholarship?
A: Click here for a comparative explanation of both programs. You can also find more information regarding the South Dakota Opportunities Scholarship at http://www3.sdstate.edu/StudentLife/OpportunityScholarship/Index.cfm The University Scholarship Coordinator monitors both these programs and can be contacted with questions or concerns.
Q: How long can I receive the Jackrabbit Guarantee?
A: Students are eligible for the Jackrabbit Guarantee for a total of 8 semesters. Sometimes a student’s scholarship can be “held” until they return from an approved absence, such as an academic internship. The student’s scholarship would then resume when they returned to campus as a full time student.
Q: Why am I required to fill out my college’s scholarship application form if I am a Jackrabbit Guarantee recipient?
A: Since scholarships that meet the Jackrabbit Guarantee come from a variety of sources, and often different scholarships have different criteria, we need students to fill out this form so that we know which scholarship(s) students are eligible for. Also, filling out your college’s scholarship form will provide you with a chance to earn even more than $1000.00 in scholarship support.
Q: What happens if I repeat a course? Does my repeated course count towards the Jackrabbit Guarantee the second time I take it?
A: Yes, as long as it is taken on the main campus of SDSU.
Q: I took Advanced Placement courses in high school. Do those courses count towards my Jackrabbit Guarantee?
A: No, only courses taken on the main campus of SDSU count towards the Jackrabbit Guarantee. CLEP, Advanced Placement, or transfer credits do not count towards meeting the 30 credit hour requirement.
Q: Is my GPA checked every semester to determine my continuing eligibility for the Jackrabbit Guarantee?
A: No. Your GPA is checked after the spring semester of the academic year to see if your cumulative GPA between fall and spring semesters is 2.5 or above. The only time a student’s GPA is checked after 1 semester is if they are on scholarship probation.
Q: What is scholarship probation?
A: If a student’s GPA falls below a 2.5 but not below a 2.0, the student may retain the scholarship for the following semester. However, the student will then be on Scholarship Probation. Students will be notified they are on scholarship probation by the university scholarship coordinator. Students must bring their cumulative GPA up to a 2.5 or higher the next semester in order to keep the Jackrabbit Guarantee
Q: How do I renew my Jackrabbit Guarantee?
A: At the beginning of the spring semester, renew eligible students will be sent a letter asking them to fill out their college’s scholarship application. Students need to follow the directions for their college in addition to the directions for Jackrabbit Guarantee renewal. Links to the scholarship application for your major college are available in the Renewal Information section above.
