Participant Information

 

Requirements

 

 

Payment of Tuition & Fees and Financial Aid

 

Plan A:

          Participants paying resident tuition to South Dakota State University will pay the in-state tuition rate, fees, room and board, etc., directly to the host institution.

 

Financial Aid:

          Plan A participants must obtain financial aid through the school that has accepted them for the exchange. It is the participant’s responsibility to contact the host school if financial aid is needed.  All host school aid deadlines apply to NSE participants.

 

 

 

Plan B:

          Participants pay tuition and fees to South Dakota State University.  Plan B participants are required to pay for 16 credits of tuition and fees per semester before leaving on exchange.  The NSE Coordinator will send a copy of participant receipts to the host institution.

 

Estimated cost for 16 credits for 2005 – 2006 academic year:

 

                   South Dakota Resident                       $9,576/yr

                   MN Reciprocity students                    $10,534/yr

                   WUE students                                    $10,764/yr

                   Out-of-state students                          $14,742/yr

 

Participants who take less than 16 credits will receive a refund after their credits are recorded at South Dakota State University. Participants who have taken more than 16 credits must pay for those extra credits.  Extra credits will not be recoded on participants’ permanent record until payment is made.  

 

Financial Aid:

Plan B participants apply for financial aid through the South Dakota State University Financial Aid Office located in Administration Bldg. 106.  Loans and grants received will apply to NSE participants.  Work-study does not apply and individual scholarships may apply.  It is the participant’s responsibility to check on individual scholarships.

 

 

NSE Proposed Courses Form

 

It is mandatory that participants complete the proposed course form before leaving on exchange.  A copy of the form must be on file with the SDSU NSE Coordinator in SSU 065.  Participants on exchange taking courses that have not been approved are not guaranteed to receive credit.

 

 

Housing Arrangements

 

Participants are responsible for arranging housing and food service through the NSE Coordinator of the host school. 

 

 

Health Insurance

 

Plan A:

If you or your family does not have health insurance, investigate health insurance possibilities at your host institution.

 

Plan B:

If you or your family does not have health insurance, the SDSU Health Insurance is available to you.

 

 

 

Quarters Convert to Semester Credits

 

One (1) quarter credit converts to .67 semester credits. Examples of converts:

                                     

Fall 2003         12  quarter credits = 8.04 semester credits

Winter 2004    12  quarter credits = 8.04 semester credits

Spring 2004    12  quarter credits = 8.04 semester credits

 

Year total 36 quarter credits  =  24 semester credits

 

 

Pre-registering Upon Completing Exchange

 

Plan A:

You must apply for readmission to SDSU however you do not pay the $15 application fee.  You must be readmitted to SDSU prior to the pre-registration period.   You must have an official transcript issued directly to SDSU. 

 

Plan B:

You will not have to apply for readmission.  You will be able to pre-register. The NSE Coordinator at SDSU will be able to pre-register for you on the day and time that you normally would pre-register.

 

 

Getting NSE Credits

 

You must make arrangements to have your completed transcript of exchange work sent to SDSU’s NSE Coordinator prior to leaving your host school.  You will receive incompletes until an official transcript is received from the host institution.

 

 

Extending or Shortening Your Exchange

 

If you decide to extend or shorten your exchange for one semester or quarter, you must contact the NSE Coordinator at both your exchange institution and SDSU.  This decision should be made well before the new semester or quarter begins.
