Confirmation Packets

Now that you’ve registered for an Orientation session, there are some things you should know before arrival for your session.

Immunization Requirement

All new, transfer and readmit students must submit medically signed proof of two properly administered MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) immunizations OR immune titers for Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, and Rubella. Students born before January 1, 1957 are exempt from this requirement. This is a requirement for attendance at all South Dakota Regental Institutions. Failure to comply will result in a hold on registration for any future semester.

Student Health & Counseling Services provides assistance, including any needed immunizations, to meet this requirement.  The clinic is open for appointments on Monday through Friday 8am - 5pm. The cost of the Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR) immunization is $55. Meningitis immunizations will also be available at a cost of $103.

For additional information and to print off a copy of the Immunization Form, please visit the Student Health and Counseling Services Website.

Modern Language Placement Test

The Modern Languages Placement Tests are available for students who have previous knowledge of a modern language (Spanish, German, or French) and plan on taking modern language courses at SDSU. The test places you in an appropriate course level. You will receive credit for the courses up to 202 (101, 102, 201, and 202) after having completed a higher level course with a grade of C or better. The placement tests for Spanish, German, and French are available online. You can take the test by visiting the Modern Language Department website You may take the test anytime, but we recommend that you take it before coming to Orientation. The test is free and can be taken more than once. Be sure to print off your test results and bring them with you to Orientation.  For additional information about Modern Languages, please visit the website above.

COMPASS Placement Test

COMPASS -- a placement test for English, mathematics, and reading -- will be offered at Orientation.  You must take the COMPASS test if any of the below situations apply to you:

New students must take the COMPASS if:

  •      Your ACT/SAT scores are more than five years old.

  •      You have never taken ACT/SAT test.

  •      Your ACT math subscore is 25 or higher.

Transfer students must take the COMPASS if:

  •      You have not completed a college-level math or reading course and have never taken ACT/SAT test (or ACT/SAT scores are more than five years old).

  •      You have not completed a college-level math course and ACT math subscore is 25 or higher.

There is no fee for COMPASS if:

  •      You have never taken ACT/SAT test.

  •      Your ACT/SAT scores are more than five years old.

  •      Your ACT math subscore is 25 or higher.

For a fee of $16.45 you may take the COMPASS to "challenge" your placement.  Because students are only allowed one challenge of their initial placement, it is important to review prior to testing.  For more information click here.  For COMPASS sample questions visit the ACT COMPASS Website.
