Berg and Bailey Hall, both constructed in 1994, comprise the University Apartments. They were built to provide on campus living accommodations for non-required (3rd year or more removed from high school graduation) students. The buildings are mirror images of each other; with forty 4-bedroom apartments housing 160 students in each building. See below for more detailed information about apartments. Berg Hall is named in honor of Sherwood Berg, President of SDSU from 1975-1984. Dr. Berg is the first SDSU graduate to serve as it's chief administrator. Bailey Hall is named in honor of Harold Bailey. In 34 years at SDSU he served as a professor in the Pharmacy Department, Vice-President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Graduate School. Apartment Configuration Apartment Furnishing/Appliances/Amenities: Living Room: All of the Bailey Hall apartments have a couch, chair, coffee table and end table. The Berg Hall apartments have unfurnished living rooms. Bed Rooms: All bed rooms are furnished with a bed (frame, legs, mattress, and mattress cover), dresser, desk and desk chair. Each bedroom also has a closet. Kitchen: All kitchens have a full size refrigerator, double sink, four-burner stove with oven, and dishwasher. There is plenty of cabinet and countertop space as well. Bathroom: The bathroom is to be shared by all roommates; each bathroom is essentially two rooms. A person walks into the sink/vanity area (two sinks, large wall mirror, with cabinet/counter space), then there is a door behind the sink/vanity area that goes into the toilet/shower room. Temperature Control: Each apartment has a temperature control that operates the Air Condition and Heat. This control works for the entire apartment, each room does not have individual temperature control. Doors and Locks: Each resident is issued three keys. One is a key to access the building from the outside, the second is an apartment door key (all roommates get their own key), the third is an individual bedroom key. The apartment door has a handle lock and a deadbolt, both operated by the apartment door key. Bedroom doors have a lock on the door handle, only the resident of that bedroom is issued a key to that room. Windows: There are windows in the living room and each bedroom. Windows are opened and closed using a crank and have locking handles (for safety and security purposes as well as to tightly seal the window from outside elements). Cable/Internet/Land Line Phone Access: Each apartment has cable, internet and line phone access in the common area and individual bedrooms. Residents wanting cable, internet, and/or land line phone access are responsible for contacting local providers for service. Building Furnishings/Amenities: Entrance Doors: The entrance doors to Berg and Bailey remain locked at all times. Each resident is issued a key for access. The main lobby doors on each side of the lobby in each hall have electronic security access; essentially allowing residents to "buzz" in a guest from their apartment. Vending: There is a soda machine and snack machine in the lobby area of each hall, coin operated. Multipurpose Room: Each building has a large community space in the lobby area. This space is open to the residents to use. Each has a seating area, tables and chairs. Hall Office: Each building has a small hall office in the lobby area. It is open and staffed limited hours every day. The hall office serves as a resource for residents; checking out equipment and games, picking up packages, a place to get questions answered and get assistance. Mail: Each resident has their own personal mailbox which they can open with their bedroom key. The Post Office delivers and sorts mail directly to these boxes. Package slips are placed in mail boxes for residents to bring to the hall office and pick up packages that do not fit into the box. Packages can be picked up during desk hours. Each apartment has a mailbox that is shares by all roommates, it is for campus mail and the apartment key accesses this mail box. There is an outgoing mail box slot for mail that is to be picked up by the Post Office. Campus mail can be left at the hall office to be delivered via the campus mail system. Elevator: The elevator in each building is located in the lobby area and goes to all four levels of the building (floors one thru three and the lower level). Laundry Facilities: Each building has a laundry room in the basement with several washers and dryers. They are coin operated or Hobo Dough can be used. Dumpsters: Dumpsters are located outside each building for resident use; residents are expected to remove their own garbage from the building. Campus Phone: There is a campus phone located in the lobby area, just around from the vending machines. This phone is only able to be used for calls to other places on campus, it does not work for dialing off-campus numbers. Staffing The University Apartments are staffed with a Resident Manager in each building. The Resident Manager oversees the day to day operation of the University Apartments. This staff member is available for residents to help when the need arises, serve as a resource, serve on call responsibilities, help with maintenance/custodial or other emergencies, and sponsor community wide programs. Contract, Roommates, Rent and Utilities: Contract: The contract for the University Apartments is for nine months (fall and spring academic semesters), residents can move in one week prior to opening day for the traditional halls and move out one week after the traditional halls close. The University Apartments are open continuously during the academic year (Berg and Bailey do not close for semester and spring breaks). Roommates: During the contracting period for the following academic year, students can pick their roommates or be placed in an apartment by the Coordinator for Apartments. *Students wanting to live in the University Apartments after the contracting period can contact the Coordinator for Apartments for space availability.* Utilities: Electricity, water, heat, and use of dumpsters is included in the rent.
