The building is named in honor of Edward Ralph Binnewies who started at
SDSU in 1909 as a student and that relationship continued until his death
in 1964. Mr. Binnewies served as an instructor, associate professor, and
full professor of chemistry. He also served the university as director of
student affairs for over 20 years. The four story hall was built in 1969.
Binnewies Hall is located on the east side of campus between Student
Center Lane and 16th street. It is joined with Young Residence Hall by
the Larson commons. When you include Caldwell you create what is
referred to as the Larson area. Binnewies Hall houses 486 residents.
Binnewies is co-ed with genders
occupying separate wings on each floor. Nearby is a large grassy recreation
area and plenty of parking. Binnewies has a few ADA accessible rooms and
laundry facilities. If you are in need of these special housing
accommodations, please contact the
Coordinator of Housing Assignments at the Department’s Central
office. The building's
staff
includes
Resident
Assistants (RA) living on each wing (house), and a full-time,
live-in professional
Residence
Hall Director (RHD) that lives in an apartment on first floor.
Besides these live-in staff there is a team of department custodian and
maintenance staff members that strive to keep Binnewies Hall a clean and
safe living learning community.
Binnewies and
Young
Halls are joined together by Larson Commons. The Larson
Commons is a great relaxation area for the residents. Larson's upper level
is a food service location for meals and is host to "Late Night Larson".
Late Night is a study option for students who want to get out of their room
or need help from a tutor. The main floor of Larson has a computer lab,
pool tables, ping-pong tables, a big screen TV and a C-Store. Binnewies
and Young Hall residents join together to form the Larson Hall Government
which is a student group dedicated to provide programs and hall improvements.
All residents are encouraged to get involved in their hall government.
The college provides each student with a movable desk, chair, dresser, loftable
bed, and built in closet. Items that are in the room for both residents
include blinds, mirror, waste can, towel hooks, new overhead lighting with
multiple light level options. For a list of items to bring or to leave at home check the
Residence
Hall Handbook (RHH).
