Brown Hall is named in honor of George Lincoln Brown who was called
upon by the Board of Regents to serve as acting president on six different
occasions, the last being when he was in his 70’s. Dr. Brown came
to the University in 1897 and served as Dean of Faculty and Dean of General
Science, but he is best remembered as an inspirational teacher. Dr. Brown
started the first summer sessions and Farm and Home week at SDSU.
Brown Hall is part of the Grove area group of residence halls. It is
located on 9th street directly south of Grove Hall. The four story hall
was built in 1959 for male residents but it has since been changed to a
co-ed hall with the genders assigned to separate wings. The hall currently
houses 380 residents at full capacity.
Brown Hall is unique in that it is the only residence hall on campus
where the wings are divided into two separated towers connected only by the
main lobby. The lobby is an especially large and comfortable space for
programs, gatherings, and socializing. Brown Hall also houses the
Healthy Lifestyles community.
A healthy lifestyle includes both
physical and mental components including: being alcohol, tobacco, & drug
free, physically active, having a balanced diet, being academically focused,
and emotionally balanced. Residents residing in Brown Hall sign an addendum
to their housing contracts agreeing to remain substance free, which means
residents agree not to use
alcohol, tobacco or other controlled substances. Programming
for the hall is focused on helping residents achieve and maintain a healthy
lifestyle. For
more information contact the
Coordinator
of Housing Assignments in the central residential life office

The building's
staff
includes
Resident
Assistants (RA) living on each wing (house), and a full-time,
live-in professional
Residence
Hall Director (RHD) who lives in an apartment on the first
floor. Besides these live-in staff there is a core group
of department custodian and maintenance staff members that strive to keep
Brown Hall a clean and safe living learning community. Brown Hall residents
can join the Brown Hall Government which is a student group dedicated
to provide programs and hall improvements. All residents are encouraged
to get involved in their hall government and the campus wide Resident
Hall Association (RHA).
