General Information

South Dakota State University's seven traditional residence halls and Caldwell's suite style building are designed to provide students with a comfortable, safe and attractive living environment. Hansen and Waneta Complex are located on the west side of campus in what is called the Medary Area. Brown, Mathews, and Pierson Halls are located centrally in the Grove Area near the Student Union. Binnewies, Young and Caldwell are located on the east side of campus.  These halls make up the Larson Area.  All the residence halls with the exception of Caldwell are co-ed by wing, with each wing having it's own bathroom.  Caldwell Hall is suite style, meaning two rooms share a common bathroom for the four occupants.

Students can request from many different types of housing including: Substance Free, Honors College, Engineering House, Health Professionals House, or Apartment style. All halls have front desks that are open during the day and early evening hours.  Click here to see a breakdown of amenities by hall.

To serve residents, the Department of Residential Life employs more than 250 employees, many of them fellow students, who are devoted to delivering services and programs aimed at supporting residents in the pursuit of academic goals and personal development.

Rooms are furnished with a bed, an extra long twin mattress, desk, chair, closets, dresser, mirror, waste basket, drapery track/slides, and have horizontal blinds in the windows.  Furniture in the halls except the Annex is fully moveable, and capable of being lofted on it's own, so students do not need to purchase or bring their own loft. Residents may also contract phone and cable services with the appropriate companies. Washers and dryers are available in all the halls and operate with either cash or by using campus Hobo dough.

Every room on campus offers direct hard-wired access to the Internet. Two ports per room means that both you and your roommate can bring computers and a dedicated data line means no interruption in voice communication or television service while using your computer.  The Information Technology Services fee is included for all students however computers are required to have a network card. For more information contact the Department of Information Technology Services Help Desk at (605) 688-6776. By connecting your computer in your room, you can: surf the Web, search the library database, get research for your papers and access e-mail accounts.  All SDSU students are also provided with their own email accounts for use.  These accounts can be used for personal use, as well as being the main contact point for professors, and other university departments.

Convenience stores (also known as C-Stores) are located in Larson and Medary offering students food, health and snack items. Students may select a meal plan that will allow them to charge items at the C-stores as well as meals in any of the campus dining areas. For more information please contract University Dining Service at 605-697-2550.
