The building is named after Hubert Mathews who came to SDSU in 1898
from Willow Lake to be a student. He returned to SDSU as an instructor
in physics and chemistry and is credited with organizing the Electrical
Engineering Department and Engineering Division. He served as the vice-president
and acting president in 1905-06 and was also a mayor of Brookings.
Mathews Hall is part of the Grove area group of residence halls. It is
located directly south of the Student Union and north of Grove Hall. The
four story hall was built in 1962 and is the second of the three halls
that make up the Grove area.
Besides the upper four floors of sleeping
rooms there is a study/program area in the lower level. Features of this
hall include: plenty of study areas, a sand volleyball court located nearby,
and the lower level contains a recreational area with pool tables, ping-pong
and foosball tables, television and kitchen areas.
Mathews houses 382 residents at full occupancy. The hall
is co-ed with genders occupying separate wings on each floor. In the
Fall 2006 Mathews Hall will become home to the Living/Learning
Communities at SDSU. The Engineering, Health Professionals, and Honors
College will all reside in Mathews Hall. Engineering will occupy the
3rd floor of Mathews, Health Professionals will be on the 1st and 2nd
floors, and the Honors College will occupy the 4th floor. For

Resident
Assistants (RA) living on each wing (house), and a full-time,
live-in professional
Residence
Hall Director (RHD) who lives in an apartment on the first
floor. Besides these live-in staff there is a group of department custodian
and maintenance staff members that strive to keep Mathews Hall a clean and
safe living learning community. Mathews Hall residents can join
the Mathews Hall Government which is a student group dedicated to provide
programs and hall improvements. All residents are encouraged to get involved
in their hall government and the campus wide Resident Hall Association
(RHA).

Is there a computer lab in the hall?
No. However there is large computer lab in Larson
Hall, NFA and Briggs Library all which are just a short walk away. In
addition, the 1st floor lounge has a computer to check student email and
is equipped with wireless internet.
How large are the rooms? Rooms are 10’6”
wide by 14’11” from door to outside wall.
Are there study areas in the hall? Yes. The
upper three floors have a study lounge in the center of each floor. The
first floor also has a sitting area that students use for study groups. In
the lower level, there are several rooms of various sizes for students to
find a quiet place to study. One of which, is a music room with a piano
and music stand for practicing and fun.
What is the closest dining facility to Mathews Hall?
The building is next to the Market dining
area located in the Student Union. Jack’s Place is also a dining/snacking
options located in the Student Union. However, Larson Commons is within
easy walking distance and the Larson concourse area is home to one of
the campus C-stores.
What will my room look like? Residents may
add their personalities to their rooms by adding pictures, posters, plants,
etc. to their rooms. However, they should check the
Residence
Hall Handbook (RHH) to be sure what they have planned does not violate
any policies and guidelines or damages the room or it’s furnishings. For

Can I bring my own furniture? Yes. Residents
may bring some of their own furniture as described in the
Residence
Hall Handbook (RHH). Since the Department of Residential Life has
furnished the room with loftable beds the residents of Mathews Hall may
not rent or build their own lofts.
