History Building Info FAQs

The building is named in honor of Gertrude S. Young a distinguished Teacher of History who started at SDSU in 1907. She served as an, associate professor, and full professor of history and in 1943 was awarded Faculty Emeritus of history upon her retirement.

Young Hall is a four story hall built in 1969 located on the east side of campus between Student Center Lane and 16th street. It is joined with Binnewies Residence Hall by the Larson commons.  When you include Caldwell you create what is referred to as the Larson area.

Young Hall houses 488 residents at full occupancy. The hall is co-ed with genders occupying separate wings on each floor. Nearby is a large grassy recreation area and plenty of parking.

The building's staff includes Resident Assistants (RA) living on each wing (house), and a full-time, live-in professional Residence Hall Director (RHD) who lives in an apartment on first floor. Besides these live-in staff there is a team of department custodian and maintenance staff members that strive to keep Young Hall a clean and safe living learning community.

Young and Binnewies Halls are joined together by Larson Commons. The Larson Commons is a great relaxation area for the residents. Larson's upper level is a food service location for meals and is host to "Late Night Larson". Late Night is a study option for students who want to get out of their room or need help from a tutor. The main floor of Larson has a computer lab, pool tables, ping-pong tables, a big screen TV and a C-Store. Young and Binnewies Hall residents join together to form the Larson Hall Government which is a student group dedicated to provide programs and hall improvements. All residents are encouraged to get involved in their hall government.

The college provides each student with a movable desk, chair, dresser, loftable bed, and built in closet. Items that are in the room for both residents include blinds, mirror, waste can, towel bars, new overhead lighting with multiple light level options.  For a list of items to bring or to leave at home check the Residence Hall Handbook (RHH).
